Counterterrorism commette gathers in Makhachkala
DAGESTAN, September 9, Caucasus Times – Members of Dagestan committee gathered yesterdy to consider emergency counterterrorism measures to be carried out in the republic. Dagestan’s leader and the head of the region’s committee Mohammed Ali Mohammedov called as well “power structures” ministers as local administrators, managers, prominent intellectuals.
The emergency meeting of top officials was caused by recent hostage taking tragedy at the Beslan school that triggered terrorism threats in the region.
Speaking at the meeting the head of Dagestan said the session was intended to mobilize peoples of Dagestan.
The top official rebuked law enforcement bodies for carefree attitude to the terrorism threats and outlined shortcomings and total corruption in police and judicial bodies. Mr. Mohammedov was quoted as saying “The bandits and terrorists bribe those officials who betray the people, commit treason.” He called for a sweep in law enforcement agencies.
In his reply, the republic’s Interior Minster Adylgirey Mohamedtagirov admitted the local police was incapable to ensure security in the republic. The minister complained that local administrators largely in mountainous regions remained negligent to anti-terrorism threats, there were some cases of complicity to extremists, namely, the case of Gimry village administrator’s son who together with nine others joined the Chechen militants.
Security Council secretary Ahmednaby Magigadzhiyev reported of several terrorist network of Wahabbis acting underground in Dagestan. Their staged attacks were targeted largely on law enforcement agents and top officials. In this year, at least 28 police officers have been killed in the attacks.
