Criminal group involved in kidnappings arrested in Russia’s Dagestan

DAGESTAN, 19 May, Caucasus Times – The activities of an organized criminal group engaged in contract killings, kidnappings, blackmail and illegal trafficking in weapons have been foiled in Dagestan, Sergey Solodovnikov, first deputy chief of the Russian Interior Ministry’s main department for the Southern Federal District, said at a news conference on Friday [19 May].

He said the distinctive feature of the group’s activity was that after receiving an order to kill a person, the bandits kidnapped and killed him, but demanded that the hostage’s relatives pay for his release.

As an example, he cited a crime which was committed in Khasavyurt in March this year – the bandits kidnapped a 55-year-old resident of the town, Eldarkhan Kandaurov. They demanded that his relatives pay a ransom of 300,000 dollars and were paid R1m [36,000 dollars] in advance. Eldarkhan Kandaurov was killed three days after he was kidnapped. Eight members of the criminal group, including its organizer, Alimpasha Amayev, 61, were detained as a result of the investigation into this crime. “This man has spent a total of 23 years in prison, he was last sentenced for kidnapping and released in 2004. But he did not abandon his intentions and knocked together another bandit group,” Solodovnikov said.

A large number of guns, assault rifles, pistols, rifles and money were found in their possession. The numbers on banknotes seized from them coincided with those on the banknotes they received for Kandaurov’s release.
