House belonging to Mufti of Karachaevo-Cherkessia and Stavropol region has been attacked in Karachaevo-Cherkessia

KARACHAEVO-CHERKESSIA, 15 March, CaucasusTimes. In the village of Pervomaiskoe in Malokarachaevski district of Karachaevo-Cherkessia group of unidentified persons opened fire on a house belonging to Ismail Berdiev, Head of Ecclesiastic Office of Muslims of Karachaevo-Cherkessia and Stavropol region. According to Ismail Berdiev, attack was absolutely unexpected for him since he did not receive any threats before. He added that noboby from his familily was injured during the attack.

He did not make any suggestions concerning possible reasons for the attack. “I would not like to connect this incident with the upcoming elections of Mufti and Muslim congress. Situation in the republic is quite stable”, – Ismail Berdiev pointed out.

Prosecutor’s Office of Malokarachaevski district instituted criminial proceedings in connection with the incident according to article # 222 of the Russian Criminal Code (illegal storage and carrying the weapons and amunition) and article # 213 (hooliganism with the application of the weapons).

Seventh Congress of Muslims of Karachaevo-Cherkessia and Stavropol region is scheduled to take place on 16 March in Cherkessk. During the Congress, elections of the Head of Ecclesiastic Office of Muslims of Karachaevo-Cherkessia and Stavropol region will be held. At present Ismail Berdiev is the only candidature for this position.
