Ingush police discover weapons cache on Chechen border

INGUSHETIYA, 14 January, Caucasus Times – A cache of weapons and ammunition was discovered on Chechnya’s administrative border near the village of Dattykh in Ingushetia’s Sunzhenskiy District.

As Caucasus Times has learnt from the Ingush Interior Ministry, the cache with weapons and ammunition was discovered by officers of the Sunzhenskiy District police department in tandem with officers of the Ingush Interior Minister’s department for combating organized crime. Some 39 handmade shells for anti-aircraft guns, two shells for anti-tank grenade throwers, one armoured jacket and several anti-tank grenades were found in the cache.

In the meantime, officers of the Sunzhenskiy District police department believe that the contents of the cache could be intended to carry out acts of sabotage against Russian Defence Ministry servicemen stationed in Ingushetia’s Sunzhenskiy District.

“Because of the immediate vicinity of Chechnya, Ingushetia’s forests on the border are often used by illegal armed formations as a conduit for the delivery of weapons to Chechnya,” Musa Batyzhev, officer of the district police department, said.

“At the same time, it should be noted that armed attacks on the Russian military in Ingushetia’s Sunzhenskiy District have become more frequent recently. We believe that we have prevented one of such actions plotted by the militants,” Batyzhev said.

The prosecutor’s office of Sunzhenskiy District has instituted a criminal case into the incident, an investigation is under way.
