MPs in Russia’s Karachay-Cherkessia get right to nominate president

KARACHAY-CHERKESSIA, 8 June, Caucasus Times. The parliament of the Russian North Caucasus republic of Karachay-Cherkessia has finally agreed to amend the constitution of the republic as proposed by President Mustafa Batdyyev.

Members of the People’s Assembly of Karachay-Cherkessia have lost their right to pass a no-confidence motion against members of the government except against the prime minister and instead obtained the right to nominate the president of the republic, the agency said.

Many observers believe that the changes made to the constitution of Karachay-Cherkessia can be the first step taken by the leadership of the republic to nominate as smoothly as possible incumbent President Mustafa Batdyyev for a second term and to eliminate other possible candidates/
President Mustafa Batdyyev is supported by the local branch of the pro-Kremlin One Russia party, which has the majority of votes in the Karachay-Cherkess parliament.

Goal Our main goal is to promote the development and sustainability of independent media in Central Asia and the Caucasus. We aim to strengthen the region’s informational sovereignty by expanding access to truthful sources and raising media literacy. At the same time, we support the development of national languages as key elements of identity and cultural heritage, encouraging public discussion and engagement. The project seeks to become a catalyst for building a strong civil society and defending democratic values, helping to train new professional journalists and fostering international cooperation.
