Rebels detained in Chechen capital, Dagestan

CHECHNYA, 18 December, Caucasus Times: A member of illegal armed formations was detained as a result of a search operation in Groznyy’s Zavodskoy district yesterday [17 December], the Chechen law-enforcement agencies have reported.

A resident of the village of Pobedinskoye had been a member of [Khabib] Makayev’s gang since 2004 and was involved in murders and armed attacks on residents of Groznenskiy and Shelkovskoy districts, the police said.

Another member of the bandit underground was detained in Dagestan after a tip-off, the source said.

“A local resident was taken into custody in the village of Bammatyurt in Khasavyurtovskiy District. He had been a member of (?Abusheykhov’s) gang since 1999 and was involved in a military action against federal forces in Chechnya,” he said.

Two accomplices of extremists were detained in the same village, the source said. They supplied gang members with arms and ammunition and transported wounded members to neighbouring Azerbaijan.
