Russia’s Ingushetia adopts anti-AIDS programme

CHECHNYA, 12 January, Caucasus Times – The Ingush government has recently approved a republican targeted programme of “Urgent measures aimed at preventing the spread of the immune deficiency virus in the republic in 2004-06”.

According to experts of the republican Anti-AIDS centre, the programme is aimed at identifying, diagnosing and treating HIV-infected people with the use of the most advanced methods and first of all at preventing the spread of the disease.

“Ingushetia now takes one of the leading places among the republics of the Southern Federal District, in terms of the number of HIV cases. We established more than 410 HIV cases during 1999-03. We are particularly worried about the growth of the incidence of AIDS among children and women,” an employee of the Anti-AIDS centre, Tamara Malsagova, said.

In the near future the republic is planning to build the first hospital for HIV-infected people and to implement a few measures aimed at social protection of HIV-infected people and members of their families.

At the same time, we support the development of national languages as key elements of identity and cultural heritage, encouraging public discussion and engagement. The project seeks to become a catalyst for building a strong civil society and defending democratic values, helping to train new professional journalists and fostering international cooperation.
