Chairman of Russian Human Rights Commission visits Ingushetia

INGUSHETIA, August 12, Caucasus Times – Yesterday, Ella Panfilova, heading the Presidential Commission on Human Rights came to Ingushetia with a working visit.

The tragic night incident in June 22 in Ingushetia caused by a massive attack of insurgents and newspaper reports of a new wave of pressure on the Chechen refugees in the republic are thought to be the main reason for the visit of the top rights official.

Yesterday, the Russian President’s representative on human rights Mrs. Panfilova had a closed door meeting with Ingushi President Murat Ziazikov. The officials discussed the problems of “internally displaced persons” from Chechnya and North Ossetia, the presidential office press service said.

The Rights Chairman is reportedly interested in a meeting with local rights groups and visiting the camps of temporary displaced persons to obtain more information about situation with Chechen refugees in the republic.
